The Project

Work has now begun on improving the church building for both the church community and for the people of Wadhurst. The church will re-open at Easter

We are installing under-floor heating, restoring our unique collection of iron slabs and re-opening the North Door to provide wheelchair access.

27 February 2026

In the church the substrate of the underfloor heating system has been laid, and work has started in the churchyard on extending the old underground boiler room. The excavation work was carefully supervised by an archaeologist and the excavated soil carefully checked for anything significant. Did someone lose a key in the churchyard a few hundred years ago?

20 February 2026

The levels of insulating material below the underfloor heating system have been laid and levelled. The ducting for electricity distribution below the floor is in place, and the ramp linking the new floor level to the vestries is in place. The first delivery of Purbeck stone for the new flooring has been received.

Among the developments this last week was the reopening of the North Door. This was bricked up over 300 years ago, but is going to be fitted with an automatic door which, with the relaying of the path outside, will enable level wheel-chair access.

25 January 2026

The work is proceeding well and ahead of schedule. Exciting developments are the discovery of a previously-unknown vault under the north transept (an archaeologist is going to investigate this and record all the details) and the lifting of the iron memorial slabs which are now going to be sent to an expert conservationist before they are relaid in the new floor.

17th January 2026

The builders have been hard at work, preparing the church for the under floor heating and electrical installation. All our precious church furniture in the chancel has been covered, to protect it from dust.

5 January 2026

Following the clearance of the church by members of the church family, the project’s main contractors, DBR, began work on Monday 5th January. The whole project is being overseen and coordinated by our Architect, Richard Andrews. We will be reopening the church for Easter, although practical completion of both internal and external work is expected in late Spring. We will be sharing more information as the project proceeds here and on our Facebook page.
